Trump reiterates call to build White House ballroom
Federal court halts construction, saying Congress did not approve project

President Donald Trump reiterated his call to build a White House ballroom following a recent shooting.

On April 26, Trump wrote on Truth Social that “the reason the military, the Secret Service, law enforcement agencies, and past presidents have demanded this for 150 years has become clear,” arguing for a larger event space.

“If a banquet hall with military-grade security had already existed, this would not have happened,” he said, urging that construction move forward quickly. He added that the new ballroom would be located inside the White House’s secure perimeter so outsiders could not gain easy access.

The shooting occurred not at the White House but at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C., during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. A man in his 30s entered a secure area armed with a gun and a knife and opened fire but was subdued before reaching the event hall. Still, the incident has prompted questions about security after a heavily armed individual was able to approach so close to the hotel’s secure zone.

The ballroom is planned for the site where the East Wing once stood, which has been demolished. Trump has pushed the project using private donations, but a U.S. federal court recently ordered construction halted, ruling that the White House cannot undertake such renovations without congressional approval.

Trump dismissed the lawsuit as “a ridiculous case brought by people with no standing,” arguing that officials should not interfere with work “that’s moving quickly and within budget.”
