A poll conducted ahead of the June 3 local elections shows Democratic Party candidate Chu Mi-ae holding a lead over People Power Party candidate Yang Hyang-ja in the Gyeonggi gubernatorial race that exceeds the poll’s margin of error.
On May 6, polling firm Jowon C&I, commissioned by Straight News, released results from a survey of 802 adults (age 18 and older) living in Gyeonggi Province, conducted May 4–5. The survey found Chu at 50.8% and Yang at 31.5%. Reform New Party candidate Cho Eung-chun received 6.6%; other individuals, 1.8%; “none,” 5.9%; and “don’t know,” 3.4%.
By age group, Yang led among 18–29-year-olds, 51.1% to Chu’s 26.6%. In their 30s, Yang narrowly led 40.3% to Chu’s 38.0%, a difference within the poll’s margin of error. Chu led decisively in older cohorts: among voters in their 40s, Chu 66.6% to Yang 22.6%; in their 50s, Chu 65.6% to Yang 16.0%; and in their 60s, Chu 57.2% to Yang 29.9%.
Among party supporters, 91.5% of Democratic backers supported Chu, while 80.6% of People Power supporters backed Yang. Unaffiliated voters favored Yang at 28.3%, Chu at 25.9%, and Cho at 11.2%.
On party support, the Democrats registered 45.3% versus 31.9% for People Power, giving the Democrats a 13.4‑percentage‑point lead. The Reform New Party stood at 4.9%, the Jo Guk Innovation Party at 3.4%, the Progressive Party at 1.9%, and other parties at 1.8%.
President Lee Jae-myung’s job approval was 61.6% favorable and 32.9% unfavorable.
The poll was conducted via an automated response system (ARS) using 100% virtual mobile numbers and proportional random sampling by gender, age group, and region.
