“I will be a mayor who changes the lives of Yongin’s 1.1 million residents.”

Hyun Geun-taek, the Democratic Party’s preliminary candidate for mayor of Yongin, formally announced his candidacy at the opening of his campaign office, “Hyun Geun-taek’s Stylish Camp,” in Gugal-dong, Giheung-gu on the afternoon of the 9th and officially launched his campaign.

Hyun said, “Yongin should not be an isolated city fighting the central government; it should build its future together with the central government.” He pledged to use the combined influence of President Lee Jae-myung, Gyeonggi Province and the National Assembly to resolve long-standing local projects. He noted that he secured a court ruling ordering 21.4 billion KRW (approximately $16.05 million) in damages in a residents’ lawsuit over the Yongin light rail, arguing that the result shows he is a well-prepared candidate who knows Yongin better than anyone.

Hyun pledged to make Yongin a world-class city that attracts global firms and top talent by expediting the start-up of Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor fab and linking it with the free economic zone. He said projects such as the YTX and the southern Gyeonggi regional railway would usher in a “30-minute-to-Gangnam” era.

The opening drew a full lineup — Gyeonggi gubernatorial candidate Chu Mi-ae; Democratic Party senior supreme council member Lee Eon-ju; local Yongin members of the National Assembly; and other primary contenders — projecting a “one team” atmosphere within the Democratic Party.

Chu praised Hyun’s drive, saying it will reshape Yongin’s future and calling him the right person to complete the southern Gyeonggi semiconductor cluster.

Lee Eon-ju also voiced her support, calling Hyun a strong ruling-party candidate capable of close cooperation with the central government.

At the event, former primary candidates Jung Won-young and Jung Chun-sook joined Hyun in a “one team” performance, pledging to win the local election. They framed Yongin as a key battleground in southern Gyeonggi and began actively consolidating support.
