Hungary, now governed by a pro-European Union (EU) administration, announced it will join sanctions against Russia.

According to Reuters, Anita Orbán, Hungary’s nominee for foreign minister, told a parliamentary hearing on the 11th (local time) that “we will pursue an equal relationship with Russia.” She warned, “Russia is our ally, but one-sided dependence must end. At present, Russian policy threatens Hungary and Europe.”

She added, “Hungary will no longer stand in the way of EU sanctions on Russia,” and said she would work to restore Hungary’s standing within the EU and NATO.

That day, István Kapitány, Hungary’s nominee for minister of Economy and Energy, said he would conduct a full review of the financing plan for the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant, a project planned with Russia’s state nuclear company. The project was agreed in 2014 but has been delayed.
