Trump’s Stance on Iran: Will Military Action Resume After Diplomatic Efforts?

After concluding his state visit to China, President Donald Trump once again addressed Iran. Although he and President Xi Jinping did not issue a joint declaration, they reportedly found substantial common ground on deterring Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Analysts say Trump returned more confident about stepping up pressure on Tehran.

On the 19th (local time), Reuters and other outlets reported that Trump raised the Iran issue while leading reporters on a tour of the construction site for a new White House state banquet hall in Washington, D.C. Officials accelerated the project after an assassination attempt on government figures at a recent White House Correspondents’ event raised concerns that outside hotels were no longer suitable for presidential functions.

Trump told reporters that when there was only an hour left before planned strikes on Iran were to resume, he had ordered a \”hold\” and called the attack off. He added a conciliatory note, saying he believes Iran’s leadership \”desperately wants to negotiate.\” Nonetheless, he left open the possibility of renewed strikes if an agreement is not reached.

Trump also cited mediation efforts by Middle Eastern leaders. He said on social media that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan asked him not to strike Iran and offered to secure a cease-fire within two to three days.

By signaling that he is weighing a real resumption of strikes while monitoring back-channel contacts with Iran in the region, he appears to be using the threat of force as leverage to extract concessions.
