After U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio repeatedly labeled Cuba a threat to U.S. national security and issued tough rhetoric, the Cuban government mounted a direct rebuttal, calling his statements \”lies.\” Tensions between the two countries have surged since the U.S. indicted former Cuban leader Raúl Castro.

On the 22nd (local time), BBC News reported Rubio told reporters, \”A diplomatic solution with Cuba remains our preference,\” but he added, \”Given the current situation, a diplomatic resolution is unlikely.\”

He accused Cuba of being among the region’s most active state sponsors of terrorism and said the island poses a threat to U.S. security.

In response, Cuban Foreign Minister Rodríguez posted on X that \”Cuba has never threatened the United States,\” calling Rubio’s remarks \”lies.\” He also accused the U.S. government of mounting a \”ruthless and systematic attack\” on Cuba.

The dispute escalated after the U.S. charged former President Raúl Castro with murder over the 1996 downing of a civilian airliner by Cuban fighters.

When reporters asked whether the U.S. planned to bring Castro to the United States to stand trial, Rubio replied, \”If we planned to bring him here, why would we publicize the plan to the press?\”

Todd Blanche, acting U.S. attorney general, said, \”We expect him to appear in the United States, whether voluntarily or by other means.\”

President Trump also intensified pressure on Cuba. At the White House, he told reporters, \”Cuba is a failed state,\” adding, \”Our administration is working to assist Cuba on humanitarian grounds.\”

He added, \”Other presidents have spent decades talking about this issue, but it seems I am the one taking action now.\”

Cuba is currently suffering severe fuel shortages, food scarcity, and prolonged power outages amid U.S. sanctions and an oil blockade. Rubio said Cuba had accepted 100 million USD (approximately 133.33 billion KRW) in humanitarian assistance proposed by the United States.

Rubio also disclosed that Adis Lastres Morera, the sister of an executive at a military-affiliated Cuban conglomerate, was arrested in Florida. He said Morera had supported the Havana communist regime on U.S. soil and that deportation proceedings are underway.
