Incumbent Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf was reelected as speaker of Iran’s 12th Parliament (Majlis).
Local Iranian media reported on the 25th (local time) that Ghalibaf secured 235 of the 276 votes in the speaker election held that day. Five members abstained.
A former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) general, he served as Tehran’s mayor from 2005 to 2017 and is considered a leading hard-line conservative in Iran. Last month, he led Iran’s negotiating delegation in talks with the United States held in Islamabad.
Although the Iranian Parliament serves four-year terms, it elects its speaker annually, and incumbents are commonly reappointed. Ghalibaf first became speaker when the 11th Parliament convened in 2020 and has been reelected each year since.
Earlier, on the night of the 11th (local time), Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf posted on X (formerly Twitter) after U.S. President Donald Trump issued harsh remarks attacking Iran, saying, \”Our military is prepared to deliver an appropriate response to any aggression.\” He added, \”The world has already learned that flawed strategies and wrong decisions always lead to bad outcomes. We are prepared for all options, and they will be surprised.\”
Ghalibaf also warned, \”There is no alternative to accepting the rights of the Iranian people as outlined in the 14-point proposal. Any other approach will reach no conclusions and will only compound failure.\” He added, \”The longer they stall, the greater the cost U.S. taxpayers will have to bear.\”
