In response to testimony that Israeli forces arrested and beat two South Korean activists during the seizure of a Gaza-bound relief ship, the government summoned Israel’s chargé d’affaires in Seoul and pressed for a thorough investigation.
On May 25, the Foreign Ministry said the government had summoned Israel’s chargé d’affaires on May 23 to raise concerns about the incident and to convey its serious objections, Yonhap News reported.
Yoo Byung-seok, director of the Consular Safety Bureau, attended the meeting.
The ministry said the government urged a thorough investigation into the harm suffered by its nationals and stressed that, if Israel’s alleged inhumane conduct is confirmed, those responsible must be held to account and appropriate measures taken.
A Foreign Ministry official said the government strongly regrets Israel’s seizure of the Gaza-bound relief ship and the arrest of two South Korean nationals, adding that it takes seriously testimony from its citizens alleging that Israeli troops beat them during the seizure and arrests.
The official said the government will respond firmly and responsibly and will continue diplomatic engagement with relevant countries.
Earlier, activist Kim Ah-hyun (activist name: Haecho), who was on the Gaza-bound relief ship and was taken by Israeli forces, said upon her return that she was struck in the face several times and now has difficulty hearing in her left ear.
