[iNews24 reporter Kim Jung-soo] Gyeonggi gubernatorial candidates from both major parties welcomed the settlement of labor talks at Samsung Electronics ahead of the June 3 local elections.
According to Samsung Electronics’ joint bargaining unit, the tentative collective bargaining agreement on wages and conditions was approved with 73.7% support.
The agreement has eased the labor-management conflict that had raised concerns about a potential companywide strike.
On the 27th, Democratic Party candidate Chu Mi-ae expressed support for the final settlement of the Samsung labor talks.
In a briefing, Chu’s campaign said it joins the public—who waited anxiously for the outcome—in welcoming the result. The statement thanked labor and management for choosing dialogue and coexistence over confrontation and expressed appreciation to the Lee Jae-myung administration for working vigorously to mediate the negotiations in the national economic interest.
The campaign added that Samsung Electronics’ success belongs not only to semiconductor workers but also to subcontractor employees, long-standing shareholders, and society at large, and said it expects deeper discussions going forward about Samsung’s social responsibilities.
Chu’s team called for the full mobilization of national resources to quickly build the southern Gyeonggi K-semiconductor cluster, citing the need for stable labor-management relations, bold R&D investment, workforce development, and expanded infrastructure such as power, water, and transportation.
On the same day, People Power Party candidate Yang Hyang-ja also welcomed the approval of the tentative agreement.
Yang’s campaign described the decision as meaningful, saying it averted a potential halt in South Korea’s semiconductor industry.
Yang said, “There was only one reason I staged a hunger strike in front of Samsung’s Pyeongtaek campus: the urgent need to prevent any stoppage in semiconductor production.”
She added, “Semiconductors are not just an issue for a single company; they are central to South Korea’s exports, jobs, and future industrial competitiveness. I sincerely thank both labor and management for making a difficult decision under challenging circumstances.”
She also said, “Gyeonggi Province is the core of South Korea’s semiconductor industry,” and pledged, “I will be an economy-focused governor who protects high-tech industries and jobs and strengthens industrial competitiveness.”
