Romero’s Captaincy Crisis: Why Tottenham Is Searching for New Leadership

[Spotv News=Reporter Jo Yong-un] Tottenham Hotspur finds itself at a crossroads after Son Heung-min’s departure, still scrambling to establish who should lead the next era at the club.

On May 28 (KST), Spurs-focused outlet Hotspur HQ reported that Tottenham repeatedly faltered this season because it never clearly defined the symbolism and responsibilities of the captain’s armband for 2025–26. The piece added that Christian Romero’s stint as captain has essentially collapsed, prompting the club to search for new leadership.

After Son left, the armband was passed to Romero. He featured in 32 matches this season, scoring six goals and providing three assists, but he struggled to serve as the squad’s steadying presence. Costly red cards disrupted momentum at crucial moments, and late in the campaign he made the unusual decision to leave England to watch a match involving his former club while Tottenham were embroiled in a survival fight.

Tottenham now looks set to strip Romero of the captaincy. With transfer speculation swirling around the defender, the club appears unwilling to force him to remain. Hotspur HQ has treated his exit as likely and has already begun compiling a list of potential successors.

Leading the pack is James Maddison. Though a preseason knee injury sidelined Maddison for most of the year, his return late in the season injected a noticeable spark. In the decisive final match against Everton — a fixture with survival on the line — Maddison was relentless: urging teammates, throwing himself into tackles and rallying the crowd.

Hotspur HQ argues Maddison has been more than a playmaker; he’s emerged as a mood-changer — the kind of visible, emotional leader fans point to when comparing current options to the commitment shown by Son Heung-min and Harry Kane.

While attacking midfielders don’t traditionally serve as on-field captains covering every area of the pitch, Maddison’s ability to lift spirits and galvanize teammates is precisely the trait Tottenham is craving right now.

Micky van de Ven is another serious contender. After Romero’s absence, van de Ven put on the armband and helped guide the side to safety. Under manager Roberto De Zerbi, his calm presence and measured, responsible interviews have done much to soothe supporters frayed by the Romero controversy.

Hotspur HQ notes that van de Ven has repeatedly stepped into a leadership role whenever the defense wavered, earning significant trust within the squad. That internal credibility makes him a popular long-term captain candidate among fans.

As a bolder, long-term option, Archie Gray is also in the conversation. Young but fearless, Gray impressed this season with his versatility and intensity — covering midfield, wide areas and defensive duties with tireless commitment. Locals already refer to him as part of Tottenham’s future.

Hotspur HQ believes Gray grows bolder with added responsibility. For a club pursuing a broad generational overhaul and structural reset, handing the armband to Gray now and shaping him into a long-term symbol is a realistic scenario the club is said to be considering.
