Will Your Sport Be Cut? The Truth Behind Brisbane 2032’s Reduced Program

Sports dropped from the official program for the 2032 Brisbane Summer Olympics could still have a pathway back to the Games.

Kirsty Coventry, an IOC member, told the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) assembly in Lausanne on May 28 (Korean time) that being left off Brisbane’s program would not necessarily mean a permanent ban and that there are routes for a sport to return.

Coventry previously signaled that Brisbane would feature fewer sports than the 36 slated for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as part of efforts to improve cost efficiency for hosts.

Addressing ASOIF members, she said, “We can’t please everyone, but our goal isn’t to destroy any particular sport.”

The IOC plans to agree on the sport and event evaluation process at the June 24 assembly in Lausanne, then finalize the official list of Brisbane sports this December. Specific medal events will be decided in 2029.
