Kim Joo-hyung is tied for the lead after the opening round of the PGA Tour’s Charles Schwab Challenge.

On the 29th at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, Kim carded eight birdies and two bogeys for a 6-under 64.

He finished the first round tied for the lead with five others, including J.J. Spaun.

Starting on the 10th hole, Kim ran off three straight birdies from Nos. 14 through 16, then added four consecutive birdies from No. 18 through No. 3.

He made his first bogey at No. 5 but birdied No. 6 to recover, only to drop a stroke again at No. 7. Play was halted for about two hours because of bad weather, and when it resumed he parred the final hole of his round, the 9th.

After the round, Kim said, “With no wind and soft greens, I played well. I created a lot of chances from good positions and converted them, which led to a good result.”

He added, “I’m trying to keep the things that worked with my new swing coach. I haven’t overhauled my swing, but the small adjustments have added up to better shots.”

Twelve players, including Doug Kim, were tied for seventh, one shot behind the leaders. Hideki Matsuyama and Ludvig Åberg were tied for 19th at 4-under 66.

Sungjae Im finished even par at 70 after three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey, ending the first round tied for 83rd with Rickie Fowler and Tony Finau.
