Could a Summit with Kim Jong-un Solve Japan’s Abduction Crisis?

다카이치 [Herald Economy=Reporter Kim Eun-hee] Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi reiterated that she will not rule out any option — including a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un — to secure the return of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea.

According to Kyodo News, on May 30 in Tokyo Takaichi attended a national rally demanding the return of abduction victims and pledged, “I will find a breakthrough during my term and resolve the abduction issue.”

She said she wants to take a bold step with Chairman Kim for the sake of people on both sides and for future generations of young people. She stressed that she is pursuing every possible opportunity, however small, to produce concrete results as quickly as possible.

Since taking office, Takaichi has repeatedly expressed her willingness to hold a summit with Kim to address the abduction issue.

The rally was organized by the association of families of abduction victims — including the family of Megumi Yokota, who was abducted in 1977 — and the support group Rescue Association. Organizers estimated roughly 800 people attended.
