NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte criticized several member states for falling short in their support for Ukraine.

According to AFP, Rutte spoke at a press conference on the 21st (local time) in Helsingborg, Sweden, ahead of a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting. He said support for Ukraine remains uneven, praising Sweden, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark for exceeding expectations while noting that many other countries are not spending enough.

Rutte recently proposed that NATO members allocate 0.25% of their gross domestic product (GDP) to aid Ukraine. If adopted, NATO’s annual support for Ukraine would triple to 143 billion USD per year (about 216 trillion KRW). His proposal reportedly faced strong opposition from major members such as the U.K. and France.

Rutte acknowledged that opposition from some countries makes the proposal unlikely to be enacted, but said discussions among allies are continuing. He urged reconsideration if allies agree that strengthening Ukraine’s ability to resist Russia is necessary to achieve peace.
