[Sports Today — Shin Seo-young] Si Woo Kim fired a 7-under 64 in the opening round of The CJ Cup Byron Nelson on the PGA Tour to sit tied for fourth. The tournament carries a $10.3 million purse.

On May 22 (Korean time), Kim posted eight birdies and one bogey at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas (par 71).

That total left him tied for fourth with Emiliano Grillo (Argentina), Keith Mitchell, Michael Thorbjornsen and Tyler Duncan (all United States), Stephan Jaeger (Germany) and Gensei Hirata (Japan).

He finished two shots back of solo leader Taylor Moore (U.S.), who opened with nine birdies for a 9-under 62.

Since joining the PGA Tour in 2013, Kim has picked up four career wins. This season he has made the cut in all 14 starts and has been remarkably consistent.

Kim has posted six top-10s this year, including one runner-up and two third-place finishes. He is chasing his first victory of the season and a fifth career PGA Tour title this week.

Kim began on the 10th hole (par 4) and birdied his first hole to get off to a strong start. He added birdies at the 12th (par 5), 14th (par 4) and 17th (par 3) to turn at 4-under.

He carried that momentum into the back nine with consecutive birdies at the 2nd and 3rd (both par 4s) and another at the 5th (par 5).

A bogey at the 7th (par 3) temporarily slowed him, but Kim closed the round with a birdie at the 9th (par 5) to finish at 7-under.

After the round, Kim said, \”I had a good round from the start. My putting, especially, went well—just like in practice. I’ve been working with a new putting coach since last year, and the time I’ve spent on putting seems to be paying off. I also changed my putter face this week, and it feels like a good fit.\”

Brooks Koepka (U.S.) shot 8-under 63 to finish tied for second with Jesper Svensson (Sweden).

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (U.S.) opened with a 5-under 66 and is tied for 16th.

Among South Korean players, Seung-yul Noh is tied for 32nd at 4-under 67. Tom Kim, Sungjae Im and Yong-jun Bae are tied for 47th at 3-under 68. K.H. Lee carded a 2-under 69 and sits tied for 74th.
