Everywhere you look, the lawns are immaculately kept, and at the center sits a pond shaped like the Chinese character for “mind” (心). Perched on the southeastern edge of Jirisan, Sancheong Suseonsa trades temple solemnity for the soothing comfort of green space.

Hwangmaesan’s sweeping ridge greets the temple from the front while Jirisan’s Cheonwangbong stands watch behind it—an undeniably auspicious setting. The grounds are open to visitors free of charge: stroll the wooden decks over the pond or unwind with a cup of tea at the quiet on-site cafe. Here’s what makes Sancheong Suseonsa so special.

Sancheong Suseonsa, located at 102-38 Ungseokbong-ro 154beon-gil in Sancheong-eup, Gyeongsangnam-do, upends expectations of a traditional temple.

Rather than the weathered austerity of many historic temples, it’s known as a modern, garden-style sanctuary where manicured lawns and natural stone pagodas coexist. From its spot on Jirisan’s southeast edge, you get sweeping views of Cheonwangbong behind and Hwangmaesan’s elegant ridgeline ahead.

The current head monk, Venerable Yeogyeong, spent roughly 30 years transforming thorny scrub and rice paddies into the cultivated grounds you see today. She chose a fresh approach over faded dancheong paint—creating a serene place where nature and contemporary landscape design live in harmony. That vision is what makes this garden-temple so singular.

The temple is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., year-round, and both admission and parking are free. Because monks maintain a space for quiet practice and to protect the pristine lawns, pets are strictly limited—so plan ahead if you’re bringing an animal companion.

Suseonsa’s seasonal charms

Meticulous landscaping gives the temple a different mood each season. In July and August, lotus blooms float across the pond fed by mountain streams, while hot-pink crape myrtles and hydrangeas splash color across the grounds—turning the site into a summer flower hotspot.

Come autumn, the foliage on Jirisan’s slopes and the wooden architecture create a quietly elegant scene. This is a favorite season for travelers who want to escape city noise and take peaceful walks on the lawn while listening to the breeze.

The large pond at the center is Suseonsa’s signature. Designed to resemble the Chinese character for “mind” (心) when viewed from above, it’s a visual nod to Buddhism’s focus on purifying the heart—a beautiful example of landscape as metaphor.

Rather than concrete, wooden “cloud” bridges and deck walkways meander over the water, blending seamlessly with the natural setting. Follow the path to watch koi glide by and to see lotus blooms reach toward you. From the center of the pond you can capture a traditional tiled roof and Hwangmaesan’s ridge in a single frame—no wonder it’s a go-to photo spot.

After a loop around the pond, drop into the temple cafe, Seon and Cha (Zen and Tea), tucked to one side of the grounds. The building’s warm wooden design doubles as a vantage point with some of the best views on site.

With floor-to-ceiling windows, every seat frames the “心” pond, the tidy lawn, and the Jirisan slopes that cradle the temple. On cool days, the rooftop outdoor seating is ideal for listening to the stream as you relax. The menu features staples like Americano plus a selection of traditional teas—rich jujube tea, omija, and lotus-leaf tea—perfect for a light, comforting refreshment before you go.

Under Jirisan’s majestic peaks, it’s rare to find a temple that pairs such clean, modern design with mountain grandeur. By reimagining the traditional temple model and showcasing how care and nature can harmonize, Sancheong Suseonsa is a serene refuge for anyone craving a breather from a busy life.
