[TourKorea = Reporter Seong-ran Jo] Forget jam-packed, tick-the-box itineraries. A new travel mood—slow, lingering walks through forests and along the coast, known as “chill trekking”—is having its moment. With more travelers chasing balance and mental reset, nature-centered trips for healing and self-discovery are trending.

Pingtung, Taiwan, is a perfect match for this vibe. It’s a nature-immersive destination where forests, valleys and dramatic coastal views collide, and it’s been popping up on the radar of Korean travelers. Spring is ideal—so take your time and stroll through Pingtung’s landscapes.

Where sea meets meadow: Kenting hiking routes

The first stop for most visitors to Pingtung is Kenting National Park. Its gently rolling trails are beginner-friendly, and the sea is basically your constant companion the whole way.

Longpan Grassland and the area around Sheding Natural Park are must-see sections. Coral-reef formations sit alongside a vast, open ocean, creating a striking mix of coastal and upland scenery that’s quietly unforgettable.

Sink into the forest: Shuangliu National Forest Recreation Area for full healing

If you want to go deeper into nature, head south to the Shuangliu National Forest Recreation Area. The trails wind through valleys, suspension bridges and dense, ancient woodland—the kind of place where the act of walking itself begins to loosen your shoulders and calm your breath.

Clear air, the babble of streams and a steady breeze combine to make walking feel restorative. You can also book guided interpretation programs in advance—walking with a knowledgeable guide adds color and context to what you’re seeing, from plant life to local ecosystems.

Another scene you’ll meet on the trail: indigenous villages

Beyond Kenting, the northern mountain townships of Wutai and Sandimen preserve primeval forests and living Taiwanese indigenous culture. Hike the trails and you’ll find traditional stone-slab houses and carved totems woven naturally into the landscape. It turns a simple trek into an intimate cultural encounter.

“Just walking is enough”—Pingtung as a wellness escape

April in Pingtung is mild, so long outdoor stretches feel easy, not exhausting. As you walk coastal paths and forest trails, your breathing naturally slows and everyday stresses start to dissolve.

No elaborate itinerary required—sometimes all it takes is a pair of comfortable shoes and the willingness to move slowly to feel restored by nature.

Travel tips | How to get to Pingtung & suggested routes

From South Korea, flights to Kaohsiung International Airport take roughly 2½–3 hours. The short flight time makes Pingtung an excellent “reset” spot for a compact 2–3 day getaway.

Ground travel is straightforward. Kenting National Park—the main hiking hub—is about a two-hour ride from the airport. The Taiwan Haosing bus (9117B) runs there, and renting a car gives you the most freedom.

Shuangliu National Forest Recreation Area is about 1½ hours from downtown Kaohsiung. A taxi or private car charter makes it an easy addition to your route.
