Ferrari Unveils ‘Lucé’: The Groundbreaking Electric Sports Car Redefining Luxury in 2023

Daniel Kim Views

On February 9th (local time), Ferrari unveiled the name and interior design of its first pure electric sports car, showcasing the brand’s vision for the future. The model, named ‘Lucé,’ marks a pivotal moment in Ferrari’s storied history.

Lucé is more than just a name; it embodies Ferrari’s electrification philosophy. The company views Lucé not as a specific technology or powertrain, but as a visionary approach. Ferrari describes electrification as a means to an end, combining design, engineering, and imagination to create unprecedented experiences. With its clean, pure form, Lucé symbolizes clarity and inspiration, reflecting Ferrari’s innovative spirit through its uncompromising vision, functionality, and quiet yet potent energy.

This model spearheads Ferrari’s new naming strategy, aiming to perfectly blend tradition with innovation. It integrates cutting-edge technology, distinctive design, and class-leading driving dynamics with Ferrari’s racing heritage, timeless sports car DNA, and modern lifestyle elements. Through Lucé, Ferrari boldly declares its commitment to reimagining the future of automotive excellence.

Ferrari celebrated Lucé’s debut with a launch event in San Francisco, co-hosted with LoveFrom, the creative collective founded by Jony Ive and Marc Newson. The two entities have collaborated closely on the Lucé project for the past five years. San Francisco, renowned as a hub for UX and interface design, provided a fitting backdrop for this groundbreaking unveiling.

Ferrari’s partnership with LoveFrom is a strategic move that clearly signals the brand’s future direction. It demonstrates a commitment to honoring Ferrari’s legendary heritage while challenging conventions, redefining everything from materials and ergonomics to interfaces and overall user experience. LoveFrom was granted extensive creative freedom from the project’s inception, resulting in a cross-disciplinary design language that captures the essence of the Ferrari experience.

The interior design vividly illustrates this philosophy. The cabin features a streamlined, unified structure that eliminates superfluous elements, optimizing the layout to create a serene yet open space conducive to focused driving. The seamless integration of hardware and software ensures that physical components and interfaces work in perfect harmony. Key elements such as the instrument cluster, control panel, and center console maintain distinct forms while being intuitively organized based on their input and output functions.

Throughout the development process, Ferrari collaborated closely with its styling center, led by Flavio Manzoni. The team refined the design to preserve the initial concept’s intent while meeting the functional requirements, packaging constraints, and homologation standards necessary for a production sports car.

Materials and production processes are central to Lucé’s core values. The main interior components utilize 100% recycled aluminum alloy. Ferrari precisely crafts each solid aluminum block using advanced 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining, followed by a state-of-the-art anodizing process. This creates a micro-surface with an ultra-thin hexagonal cell structure, achieving exceptional durability, hardness, and tactile depth. The display features precision-processed Corning Fusion5 glass, enhancing durability and scratch resistance.

Through Lucé’s interior, Ferrari transcends mere luxury, emphasizing material authenticity, craftsmanship, and thoughtful innovation. This approach offers Ferrari enthusiasts a fresh perspective that respects tradition while embracing the future, reaffirming the brand’s unwavering commitment to quality, performance, and cultural significance.
