Ferrari Names Its First Electric Car ‘Luce’, Embracing Physical Controls

Ferrari has unveiled the name and interior design of its groundbreaking all-electric model. At a recent event in San Francisco, the Italian automaker christened its new EV “Luce,” meaning “light” in Italian.

This landmark project is the result of a collaboration with LoveFrom, the creative collective led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive and industrial designer Marc Newson.

LoveFrom brings together a diverse team of experts, including designers, architects, engineers, musicians, sound designers, and typographers. Ferrari reports that this five-year partnership has involved close collaboration across all aspects of vehicle development, going far beyond mere exterior styling.

The Luce’s interior design prioritizes the human interface. Challenging the industry’s touchscreen-centric approach to EVs, Ferrari and LoveFrom have implemented an array of physical buttons and dials, emphasizing an intuitive and engaging user experience.

The steering wheel pays homage to Ferrari’s heritage, reimagining the iconic wooden Nardi wheels of the 1950s and ’60s. Crafted from 100% recycled aluminum alloy, its three-spoke design visually accentuates the material’s inherent strength.

While embracing physical controls, the Luce also incorporates state-of-the-art display technology. The driver’s instrument cluster features an ultra-thin, lightweight OLED panel developed in partnership with Samsung Display. At its center, a multi-graph system blends analog gauges with digital controls, providing essential information like compass readings, time, and launch control data.

In an industry first, the Luce’s ignition key incorporates an E Ink display. When inserted into the center console, the display shifts from yellow to black, signaling the vehicle’s readiness to drive.

Ferrari is set to reveal the Luce’s full specifications, including its exterior design, at an event in Italy this May.
