Miryang, in South Gyeongsang Province, is accelerating its transition into a future-mobility city centered on drone technology.

The city was selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s “2026 Drone Demonstration City Project” and, on March 13, signed an agreement at the Daejeon Convention Center alongside 18 municipalities nationwide.

The Drone Demonstration City Project is a national competition that identifies drone-use models tailored to local needs and drives innovation in public services.

This year Miryang was chosen as a new participant in the K-Drone delivery initiative alongside Uljin, Gumi, Nonsan, Dangjin, Chungju and Suwon. It is the only municipality from South Gyeongsang Province to receive the designation.

Miryang plans to roll out neighborhood-focused drone services from hubs including Sammun-dong Waterfront Park, Hanam Sports Park, and the Miryang Arirang Auto Camping Site.

To ensure a successful rollout, the city has formed a consortium with firms that bring drone technology and testing expertise.

Industrial drone specialist MGIT, Boda, and the Miryang Drone Center will participate in the consortium, providing technical capabilities and operational support.

The city will build an integrated drone control center to monitor flights in real time and strengthen safety management, introducing a three-layer safety framework.

Lee Jeong-gon, Miryang’s deputy mayor, said, “Being selected as a drone demonstration city is a pivotal step for Miryang as we develop into a drone-focused city. We will create drone parks, pursue designation as a drone special free zone, and connect drone capabilities with the future mobility industry to make this a new growth engine for our city.”

Miryang plans to use drone delivery services to better link local businesses and festivals, and to introduce revenue models that will support self-sustaining operations.

Officials expect the initiative to play a key role in transforming Miryang into a cutting-edge mobility hub.
