Motional, Hyundai Motor Group’s autonomous-driving joint venture, has launched a pilot Ioniq 5 robo-taxi service in Las Vegas in partnership with Uber. The service initially covers key areas, including hotels along Las Vegas Boulevard, downtown and the Town Square shopping district, and Motional plans to expand the coverage over time.

When riders request a trip through the Uber app while inside the service zone, a Motional Ioniq 5 robo-taxi is dispatched automatically. Riders pay the same fare as a regular trip with no surcharge, or they can request reassignment to a human-driven vehicle. Passengers unlock the vehicle through the Uber app; after boarding they receive a welcome message and a voice reminder to fasten their seatbelts. If they need assistance during the ride, they can connect with a live agent via the app. Customers who prefer robo-taxis can select that option in the Uber app’s Ride Preferences menu.

Motional and Uber signed a 10-year strategic partnership in 2022 to combine autonomous-driving technology with Uber’s customer network and accelerate mainstream adoption. Earlier that year they ran an Uber Eats delivery pilot in Los Angeles, and later in the year they launched a ride-hailing pilot in Las Vegas.

Motional says it prioritizes safety in autonomous vehicle operations. The Ioniq 5 robo-taxis used in the pilot meet U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and operate at SAE Level 4 autonomy. For safety during the pilot phase, a human safety operator will be present in each vehicle. Motional intends to use rider feedback gathered during the pilot to refine the service and aims to start fully driverless robo-taxi operations by the end of the year.

David Carroll, Motional’s vice president of commercialization, said, “We’re ready to partner with Uber again based on the driving experience we’ve accumulated. Our AI-based autonomous-driving technology can navigate a variety of routes safely and smoothly.” Sarfraz Maredia, head of Uber’s Autonomous Mobility & Delivery, said, “We’re pleased to launch Motional’s autonomous taxis in Las Vegas. This service reflects our shared goal of prioritizing safety and trust while expanding mobility options for more customers.”

Industry observers view the pilot as an important step toward broader adoption of autonomous driving as Hyundai Motor Group, Motional and Uber combine technology with customer networks. The Ioniq 5 robo-taxis will operate across major areas of Las Vegas and can be summoned through the Uber app, with features aimed at improving passenger convenience and safety.
