Alton, a leading bicycle manufacturer, has become the first in the Korean bike industry to commercialize an electric bicycle using LMFP (Lithium Manganese Iron Phosphate) batteries, the company announced on February 10.

By implementing a battery that simultaneously enhances thermal stability, lifespan, and energy efficiency, Alton aims to establish new benchmarks for e-bike battery safety and performance.

LMFP batteries incorporate next-gen cathode materials, adding manganese (Mn) to the existing LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) chemistry. This innovation boosts both stability and energy density. Alton’s focus with this LMFP application is twofold: structurally mitigating the thermal runaway risk that has long plagued e-bike batteries, and enhancing long-range riding efficiency.

The LMFP battery showcases superior heat resistance compared to conventional lithium-ion (NCM) cells, effectively preventing overheating even in high-temp conditions. Its phosphate-based crystal structure significantly reduces the risk of oxygen release, thereby lowering fire hazards. This battery maintains stable performance even under abnormal conditions, making it a standout choice for e-mobility safety.

Durability has also seen marked improvements. Alton reports that LMFP batteries maintain high capacity retention even after about 800 charge-discharge cycles. This represents a substantial boost in longevity and cost-effectiveness over traditional lithium-ion batteries, which typically last around 500 cycles. E-bike users can expect less frequent battery replacements and lower maintenance costs as a result.

Moreover, this battery technology aligns with eco-friendly practices, supporting current ESG management trends.

Alongside the LMFP battery integration, Alton has upgraded its smart charging and battery management systems. The company has bolstered its BMS-based safety protocols by precisely regulating voltage, temperature, and output during charging. Alton plans to progressively expand LMFP battery use across its main e-bike lineup.

An Alton spokesperson stated, “Commercializing LMFP battery e-bikes marks a significant technological leap in enhancing the critical aspects of thermal stability, lifespan, and efficiency in e-bike batteries. We’re committed to continually strengthening our tech leadership in the e-mobility market through advanced battery innovations.” /csjung@sedaily.com
