Ferrari Names Its First Electric Vehicle ‘Luce’, Embracing Physical Controls

Ferrari has unveiled the name and interior design of its inaugural all-electric model. At an event in San Francisco on February 9, the Italian automaker revealed that its groundbreaking EV will be called “Luce,” meaning “light” in Italian.

◆ Five-Year Design Collaboration with Jony Ive’s LoveFrom

This project is the result of a partnership with LoveFrom, the creative collective led by former Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive and Marc Newson.

LoveFrom brings together a diverse team of experts, including designers, architects, engineers, musicians, sound designers, and typographers. Ferrari disclosed that their five-year collaboration with LoveFrom extended beyond mere aesthetics, encompassing all aspects of the new vehicle’s development.

◆ Bucking the Trend: Prioritizing Tactile Controls Over Touchscreens

The interior design philosophy centers on the ‘human interface.’ Ferrari and LoveFrom have challenged the industry norm of large touchscreens dominating EV interiors. Instead, they’ve implemented numerous physical buttons and dials, emphasizing an intuitive, hands-on user experience.

The steering wheel is a modern reinterpretation of the iconic wooden Nardi wheel from 1950s and ’60s Ferraris. Crafted from 100% recycled aluminum alloy, its three-spoke design visually showcases the material’s inherent strength.

◆ Cutting-Edge Tech: Samsung OLED and E Ink Displays

Complementing the physical controls are state-of-the-art display technologies. The driver’s instrument cluster features an ultra-thin, lightweight OLED panel developed in partnership with Samsung Display. At its center, a multi-graph system combines analog gauges with digital controls, displaying information such as a compass, clock, and launch control data.

In an industry first, the ignition key incorporates an E Ink display. When inserted into the center console, the display shifts from yellow to black, signaling the vehicle is ready to drive.

Ferrari is set to reveal the Luce’s full specifications, including its exterior design, this May in Italy.
