Genesis to Accelerate Independent Strategy with Dedicated Electrification Platform by 2027

Shifting to a Pragmatic Premium Strategy with Hybrid and EREV Technologies

Genesis is set to launch its dedicated electrification platform by 2027, marking a significant step towards independence within the Hyundai Motor Group.

Having passed its 10th anniversary, Genesis is positioning the next decade as a period to “evolve from a luxury brand to a true premium brand.”

At the core of this evolution is the next-generation dedicated electrification platform. This move is seen as a declaration to redefine the brand’s identity from the ground up, going beyond simply expanding its electric vehicle lineup.

Limitations of Shared Platforms

Redefining Premium Standards

Currently, most of Genesis’ electric vehicle lineup is based on Hyundai Motor Group’s shared platforms. While Genesis already uses the rear-wheel-drive M3 platform, it’s fundamentally based on the third-generation architecture shared across the Hyundai Motor Group.

However, Genesis has recognized the limitations of shared platforms in delivering the driving dynamics, quietness, body rigidity, and suspension settings expected by premium customers.

A European representative clearly stated the need for an independent approach, saying, “A dedicated platform is necessary to achieve the brand’s unique driving feel.”

Revised Electrification Strategy

From EV-Only to a Pragmatic Approach

Genesis has also become more flexible in its electrification strategy. Initially aiming for a full transition to pure electric vehicles by 2030, the brand has now pivoted to a diversified approach that includes hybrid and Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs).

The first hybrid model is slated for 2026, followed by an EREV in 2027. The EREV model aims to achieve over 900km of range on a single charge and fuel fill-up. This strategic adjustment is seen as a response to the global disparities in charging infrastructure and consumer realities.

GV90-Centered Large SUV Strategy

Expanding into High-Performance

The upcoming large electric SUV, the GV90, is rumored to be the first candidate for the next-generation platform. Additionally, an off-road-oriented large SUV and an ultra-large concept model are likely to be included in the future portfolio.

A high-performance strategy is also in the works. Starting with the GV60 Magma, Genesis plans to expand high-performance derivatives across its sedan and SUV lineup, aiming to strengthen both electrification and performance simultaneously.

Genesis is preparing for its leap into the global luxury market, setting goals to enter 20 European countries and achieve annual sales of 350,000 units by 2030.
