Michelin is bolstering its market position by providing OE tires for Hyundai Motor’s hydrogen-powered truck, the New Xcient.

Michelin announced on the 10th that its X Line Energy tires will be fitted as original equipment on Hyundai’s New Xcient hydrogen fuel cell trucks exported to Europe, starting from early this year.

The New Xcient hydrogen fuel cell truck is Hyundai’s large commercial vehicle equipped with a 180 kW hydrogen fuel cell system and a 350 kW electric motor, capable of traveling over 720 km on a single charge when fully loaded.

This truck combines Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel cell platform with PlusAI’s Level 4 autonomous driving software, “SuperDrive.” This integration enhances the eco-friendly benefits of hydrogen-powered trucks – such as rapid refueling, long-range capability, and zero-emission operation – with advanced autonomous driving technology.

The Michelin X Line Energy is renowned for its high efficiency, specifically optimized for long-haul transportation. Michelin emphasizes that these tires contribute to reducing operational costs in the trucking industry through superior fuel efficiency and durability.

Moreover, the tire features a compound that achieves exceptionally low rolling resistance and robust carcass technology, earning the highest rolling resistance rating of A in Europe. This design minimizes energy loss during operation, thereby improving fuel economy for commercial vehicles.

Michelin explains that the X Line Energy not only cuts fuel costs but also provides environmental benefits by reducing carbon emissions. The tire’s design incorporates a sturdy structure and self-healing tread, integrating cutting-edge technologies to ensure longevity and safe driving throughout its lifespan.

Michel Michal, CEO of Michelin Korea, stated, “It’s a significant milestone for Michelin to supply tires for Hyundai Motor’s latest hydrogen fuel cell trucks. As a company that has long championed energy efficiency and the shift towards eco-friendly energy, this partnership aligns with our goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and supports Hyundai’s leadership in the global hydrogen industry.”

He added, “Michelin continues to develop solutions and services that meet the evolving needs of the commercial vehicle sector. Our focus is on delivering outstanding performance and energy efficiency, while also addressing economic, environmental, and safety requirements.”
