On March 15, Min Hyung-bae, a Democratic Party lawmaker for Gwangju’s Gwangsan A district who has declared his candidacy for the Jeonnam–Gwangju special mayoral race in the June 3 local elections, said he plans to convert Gwangju’s internal-combustion–centered auto industry into an AI-powered future mobility sector.
In a press release, Min said he would link Gwangju’s vehicle manufacturing base and AI infrastructure with Jeonnam’s energy and materials industries to create a future-mobility ecosystem.
He said AI, alongside electrification and autonomous driving, is rapidly transforming the auto industry into a high-tech sector. He pledged to cultivate 100 companies to transition to future-vehicle production, support 200 AI-driven autonomous-manufacturing firms, and launch 200 new future-mobility ventures — aiming to create 100,000 jobs.
Min outlined plans to convert vehicle assembly plants to produce next-generation cars, upgrade regional parts suppliers, develop Gwangju as a core future-mobility hub, establish a Gwangju–Jeonnam industrial belt, and boost local employment.
He said combining the strengths of Gwangju and Jeonnam would build a future-mobility industrial city and revive the region’s auto industry.
