Exploring Future Mobility: How Korea and EU Are Advancing EV and Autonomous Vehicle Collaboration

South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on March 26 that Minister Kim Yun-deok met with Ugo Astuto, the European Union (EU) ambassador to South Korea, to discuss expanding cooperation across transportation sectors, including automotive, aviation, research and development (R&D), and sustainable mobility.

Both sides agreed to use the 3rd Korea‑EU High‑Level Transport Cooperation Meeting, scheduled for May in Seoul, as a platform to increase policy exchanges and deepen collaboration in eco‑friendly and sustainable mobility.

The ministry and the EU have maintained policy channels to tackle global challenges such as carbon reduction and digital transformation. Recently, South Korean research institutions have begun participating in EU multilateral R&D programs, expanding international joint research efforts.

The EU signaled it is eager to broaden cooperation in the automotive and aviation sectors and hopes to extend collaboration into new industries, including environmental technologies and next‑generation mobility.

Kim said, “We are cultivating the future mobility industry with a focus on commercializing autonomous vehicles. I expect Korea‑EU cooperation on vehicle safety standards and autonomous‑driving technology to strengthen our global competitiveness.”

He added, “We should build on cooperation in aviation safety and air traffic management to expand collaboration on eco‑friendly aviation policies and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).”

Both sides agreed to expand cooperation across autonomous driving, future mobility and R&D to deliver concrete outcomes.
