GWM’s Haval brand has revealed its new flagship SUV, the HX, marking a concerted push into the global off‑roader market.

The HX is a full‑size SUV developed to go head‑to‑head with the Toyota Land Cruiser and Land Rover Defender, and it delivers a presence well beyond Haval’s previous models.

Haval is set to unveil the HX officially at the Beijing Auto Show, and many expect the model to be positioned for international markets as well.

The HX adopts traditional off‑roader design cues.

Square headlamps, a simple grille, thick pillars and angular wheel arches reinforce a rugged stance. The rear uses a swing‑type tailgate and an externally mounted spare tire.

Notably, a LiDAR unit mounted on the roof highlights the integration of advanced autonomous driving systems.

Design observers also see elements borrowed from Chinese premium SUVs such as the Yangwang U8.

The powertrain uses a plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) system.

A 2.0‑liter turbocharged engine paired with two electric motors will be mated to an all‑wheel‑drive system and a four‑speed automatic transmission.

GWM has not released specific output figures, but given recent high‑performance moves from Chinese brands, the HX is expected to deliver robust performance.

The HX rides on GWM’s latest ‘One Architecture’ platform, which the company says enhances driving stability and scalability.

The HX will offer autonomous driving features such as ‘Navigate On Autopilot’ for both city and highway use, along with an automated parking system.

That positions the HX as more than a simple off‑roader; Haval is pitching it as a technology‑centric SUV.

Pricing has not been announced. A third‑quarter launch is expected, and industry sources say exports beyond China are likely.

Industry analysts say Chinese SUVs have entered a new phase: they now challenge established rivals not only on price but on design and technology as well.
