‘Bumblebee’ Camaro could return

Chevrolet likely to bring it back for the 2028 model year

But a ‘4-door’ layout would be a major departure

The Camaro, quiet since its discontinuation, appears poised for a comeback.

International reports say General Motors has given final approval to develop the next-generation Camaro, with production likely to begin in late 2027. That timing points to a 2028 model-year launch.

That would be a much shorter gap than the 8-year hiatus between the 2002 discontinuation and the Camaro’s return in 2010.

Rear-wheel drive to remain…

The ‘authentic muscle car’ identity endures

Reports indicate the new Camaro will retain rear-wheel drive (RWD), as before.

The car is expected to use the Alpha platform — the same architecture under Cadillac’s CT4 and CT5 — and internal-combustion powertrains are likely to remain in the lineup.

Because the architecture supports configurations ranging from turbocharged 4-cylinders up to V8s, the Camaro is expected to retain its high-performance muscle‑car credentials.

For now, a switch to an SUV body or a fully electric Camaro appears unlikely.

Biggest change…

Possibility of a ‘4-door Camaro’

The most significant change under consideration is the body style.

Industry sources say the next-generation Camaro may transition from the traditional 2-door coupe to a 4-door sedan.

The move would be interpreted as a push to increase practicality and broaden the Camaro’s buyer base.

With sedans like the Dodge Charger already delivering a muscle-car feel, analysts say the market could be receptive to a 4-door Camaro.

An icon evolving…

Fans likely to be split

The Camaro is more than a sports car; it has long been a brand icon.

The change could help expand sales, but it may disappoint fans who prefer the traditional 2-door muscle car.

Ultimately, the next-generation Camaro will be tested on its ability to balance authenticity with broader market appeal.

Industry observers say the Camaro isn’t disappearing — it’s evolving — and they expect market reaction to depend heavily on the final production configuration.
