The CEN News / Reporter Lee Joo-sang | Damyang County will resume a direct intercity bus service between Damyang and Gwangju’s Cheomdan district on May 6 to ease residents’ commutes and improve access to the broader Gwangju area.
Donggwang Damyang Express Co. began operating the route in August 2016, but financial difficulties forced service to be suspended in October 2018. The line then remained inactive for several years.
The development of the Dambit district has attracted new residents, and demand for travel toward Gwangju’s Cheomdan area has steadily grown. Residents pressed for the route’s return, and after discussions with the carrier the county agreed to reinstate service.
Although designated as an intercity express, the route was planned to stop at major local hubs to better serve residents’ everyday needs.
The service will depart Damyang Terminal, call at the Dambit district and the communities of Soubuk and Daejeon-myeon, then continue to Gwangju’s Cheomdan area (near Sejong Bookstore) and the U-Square Terminal. It will operate four round trips daily.
Officials say the restored line should sharply cut travel time to the Cheomdan district—trips that once took nearly two hours by local buses are expected to be roughly an hour shorter—easing commutes and school runs.
Acting Damyang County Mayor Lee Jeong-guk said, “We expect residents’ access to Gwangju to improve significantly,” and added that the county will continue pursuing demand-driven public transit policies to reduce transportation blind spots.
