Traffic Chaos on May 1: How to Navigate Korea’s Highways Effectively

Highways across South Korea were clogged with traffic on the afternoon of May 1, the first day of the extended May holiday.

On May 1, the Korea Expressway Corporation estimated about 6.05 million vehicle trips on the nation’s highways. Outbound congestion from Seoul began building around 6–7 a.m., peaked between 11 a.m. and noon, and was expected to ease by roughly 9–10 p.m. Traffic heading toward Seoul started to slow around 9–10 a.m., was worst around noon–1 p.m., and was forecast to return to normal by 10–11 p.m.

As of 2 p.m. at toll gates, estimated outbound travel times were: Seoul to Busan, 7 hours 10 minutes; Seoul to Gwangju, 6 hours 20 minutes; Seoul to Daejeon, 3 hours 40 minutes; and Seoul to Gangneung, 4 hours 50 minutes.

Estimated inbound travel times were: Busan to Seoul, 5 hours 50 minutes; Gwangju to Seoul, 4 hours 30 minutes; Daejeon to Seoul, 2 hours 20 minutes; and Gangneung to Seoul, 2 hours 40 minutes.
