Rep. Wi Seong-gon (Democratic Party, Seogwipo), who is running in the Democratic Party primary for Jeju governor, released a press statement on Feb. 15 urging candidates to make the race a \”festival of democracy\” focused on policy and vision.
Wi proposed a three-way meeting with Gov. Oh Young-hoon and Rep. Moon Dae-rim and presented a draft joint pledge.
The pledge proposed by the three Democratic primary candidates calls for: a commitment to a zero‑negativity primary; active participation in policy debates to protect residents’ right to know; and acceptance of the results with an immediate transition into a united \”one‑team\” behind the nominee.
Wi said, \”This primary should be a fierce policy contest that decides Jeju’s future, not a campaign of attacks on opponents. A victory earned by denigrating others will only be poisonous in the general election and beyond.\”
He added that the hateful language flooding social media and news comment sections is dividing the party and eroding residents’ trust. He urged everyone—regardless of who becomes the candidate—to stop the slander now so the party can unite as a genuine one‑team and secure victory in the general election.
